It is the administrative center of the Savanne district. It is here that you can find the famous <strong data-start=\"200\" data-end=\"220\">Roche qui Pleure<\/strong> at the <strong>Gris-Gris<\/strong> site.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p>This part of the coast is not surrounded by coral reefs, and the waves crash directly against the cliffs, offering a unique panorama of the Indian Ocean, very different from Mauritius\u2019 lagoons.<\/p>\n\n<p>Souillac plays an important role in the development of the southern coast. The village has numerous healthcare and administrative services, as well as essential shops for the daily life of its residents.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let\u2019s explore Souillac with a little history<\/h3>\n\n<p>Let\u2019s go back to <strong data-start=\"126\" data-end=\"134\">1787<\/strong>, when Mauritius was called Isle de France. At that time, the island was an important stopover for French ships on the route to India. The French also wanted to establish a strategic base to defend the southwest of the island. It was then that the governor, <strong data-start=\"392\" data-end=\"425\">Viscount Fran\u00e7ois de Souillac<\/strong>, decided to create a port in this region.<\/p>\n\n<p>Since 1987, a twinning agreement has existed between the village and the French town of Souillac, in the Lot department. It was initiated by Armand Maudave, former ambassador of Mauritius to the United Nations, Alain Chastagnol, then mayor of Souillac (France), and the Count of Montferrand, a descendant of Viscount de Souillac. Famous for the relentless crashing of the waves, which seem to pour tears down its face, it is <strong>one of the<\/strong> <strong>most visited sites in Mauritius.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><p data-start=\"56\" data-end=\"362\">Further north, you will find <strong data-start=\"85\" data-end=\"104\">Rochester Falls<\/strong>, a 10-meter-high waterfall that flows into the Savanne River. Its basalt volcanic rocks attract many swimmers and walkers. The site also leads to <strong data-start=\"251\" data-end=\"266\">Exile Falls<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"275\" data-end=\"299\">Combo Natural Forest<\/strong>, where the wildlife and flora are both wild and magnificent.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p>Another place to discover in Souillac is the charming <strong data-start=\"418\" data-end=\"436\">Jardin Telfair<\/strong>. Locals love this seaside spot and often gather there for picnics. The garden is named after <strong data-start=\"530\" data-end=\"549\">Charles Telfair<\/strong>, an Irish naturalist who developed the Bel Ombre sugar estate.
