Let’s discover Tamarin – Tamarin is a typical village in western Mauritius. It’s popular with locals, expatriates and tourists alike, looking for peace and quiet, sporting activities and a friendly atmosphere. A must-see surfing spot with the renowned Cap Dal, Tamarin is also a great place for hiking, with the Tourelle mountain and the Black River Gorges National Park just outside the village on the road to the south.
Tamarin symbolizes the right balance between a relaxed atmosphere, a pleasant climate and lively evenings. So come and discover the village of Tamarin – you won’t want to leave!
Tamarin, between sea and mountains
At the mouth of the Tamarin River, where the bay splits in two, lies a long sandy beach. This cove, unprotected by the coral reef, is one of Mauritius’s most popular surf spots.
It’s home to the wild Tamarin public beach, frequented by a few Mauritian families on weekends and tourists from the small hotels in the area. The sunsets here are magnificent, with breathtaking views of the Trois Mamelles and Rempart mountains.
Further south is the bay where the Rivière Noire (Black River) flows into the sea, a name also given to the district to which Tamarin belongs. These two bays are teeming with traditional fishing boats, giving the area a poetic feel.
Thanks to its geographical location, Tamarin is well-suited to a number of hikes, including the Montagne de la Tourelle. Although the climb is quite strenuous, the reward is a breathtaking panorama of Morne Brabant, the gorges and the lagoon.
A bit of history and a lot of nature
On the beach at La Preneuse is the Martello Tower, built by the British. In the early 19th century, it served to protect the British from the French fleet, which was in the process of reconquering the island. The tower has been open to visitors since its restoration in 1999 and houses a small museum.
La Preneuse, a small spit of fine sand, offers a magnificent view of Morne Brabant and the Rivière Noire mountain range in the background.
Not far away is one of the entrances to the Black River Gorges National Park. This is one of the most visited natural sites in Mauritius. It is home to hundreds of endangered plants, trees and endemic species.
Hiking trails take you through the lush vegetation, offering sumptuous panoramic views all along the way. Another hike of several hours to the Tamarin Falls is also possible, to discover the 7 waterfalls that abound in freshwater basins and natural pools.
For golf enthusiasts, there’s the Tamarina Golf Club, an 18-hole course with sea and mountain views.
Another of Tamarin’s must-see sites is the Yemen saltworks. Located at the entrance to the village, at the foot of the Tourelle mountain. This is one of the last active salt marshes in Mauritius. This small, traditional operation has been producing salt for generations. Around 1,500 tonnes of salt are harvested each year. The best time to visit the salt works is at harvest time, between September and December.
A water sports paradise
Along with One Eye and Manawa, Tamarin Bay is a surfer’s paradise. It is particularly popular during the austral winter, from May to October. The area is also ideal for bodyboarding and stand-up paddling.
Many excursions leave from the beach to observe or swim with the dolphins. These regular visitors to Tamarin Bay number around 500, divided into two main species.
Other boat trips are also available to spend the day on Ile aux Bénitiers. Here, you can enjoy a picnic on the beach, with the added bonus of a stopover around the famous rock crystal.
Tamarin, between authenticity and modernity
This fishing village has become a small seaside resort. But it has the reputation of having retained its 100% Mauritian soul. It has grown without losing any of its charm, and everything is designed to make daily life simple and gentle.
Today, it is home to many foreign residents, expatriates, retirees and investors attracted by the right balance of amenities, calm and nature.
Tamarin has everything you need for everyday life: supermarkets, convenience stores, schools, clinics, retirement homes and offices. And there’s no shortage of entertainment, with a wide range of bars and restaurants.
The real estate on offer ranges from luxury villas to penthouses and sea-view apartments. A wide range of acquisition options are available to foreigners, giving them permanent residency.
